For Tecumseh High School junior Makenzie Benge, volleyball means more than the result shown on the scoreboard. As a middle hitter and middle blocker for the Lady Savages, Benge brings energy, effort and an appreciation for the relationships built through competition.
Benge is in her second season playing varsity volleyball at Tecumseh. She also balances a busy athletic schedule as a third-year member of the varsity cheer squad and a club player for the OKC Charge 17 National Blue team, where she plays the middle hitter and middle blocker positions.
While individual recognition can be rewarding, Benge values the collective progress and unity that come from sharing a season with teammates.
“The accomplishment I am most proud of isn’t just a single win or stat on the scoreboard. It’s the way our team comes together to overcome challenges throughout the season. Working alongside my teammates, pushing each other during tough practices, and celebrating our team’s progress created a bond and memories that mean far more to me than any individual award. Learning how to truly collaborate, trust one another, and rely on team chemistry teaches us lessons we will carry on after volleyball ends.”
Her faith also shapes the way she approaches athletics, adversity and leadership. Benge said Jesus provides an example that influences how she treats people and handles difficult moments.
“Jesus inspires me more than anyone else because He provides the ultimate model of love, humility, and servant leadership. In my daily life and in sports, His teachings guide how I treat others, handle challenges, and strive to be a person of strong character. Striving to follow His example pushes me to lead with compassion, act with integrity, and give my best in everything I do.”
Benge also draws motivation from former Tecumseh standout Kennedy Mason, whose work ethic showed her that athletes from smaller communities can still pursue opportunities at the next level.
“Coming from a small town, it can often feel much harder to get noticed when it comes to college recruiting and playing at the next level. Kennedy completely changed my perspective by proving that relentless hard work can overcome any circumstance.”
As Benge continues her volleyball career, that belief remains central: trust God’s plan, embrace the work and invest in the teammates beside her.
