Shawnee’s Suzy Howle – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Amy Price, Shelter Insurance

Shawnee High School freshman Suzy Howle has grown up around volleyball, and now she is bringing her knowledge, versatility and team-first attitude to the varsity court.

Howle’s main position is setter, but she is prepared to contribute wherever the Wolves need her. She has played outside hitter/right-side hitter and back row this season, embracing the challenge of moving among roles.

“I am playing both setter, OHRS, and sometimes even back row, but my main position is setter. The most difficult thing about my positions are probably shifting to each one back and forth all of the time! Although it is hard I am always willing to do it for my team!” Howle said.

That willingness to adapt has become one of her biggest lessons in the sport. For Howle, being flexible is not simply about playing different spots on the floor; it is about supporting her teammates and doing what benefits the group.

“I learned to be flexible. This has helped me because it makes me know it’s for my team and I want to help my team,” she said.

Volleyball has long been part of Howle’s life. Her mother coach’s volleyball at Oklahoma Baptist University, while both of her parents competed as high-level athletes at the University of Oklahoma. Her mother’s volleyball accomplishments have been an especially strong influence.

“I have always been inspired by both of my parents because they were both high level athletes at the University of Oklahoma, but in the volleyball aspect my mom because she is really driven and was the Big 12 libero of the year,” Howle said.

Howle also competes in basketball, soccer and track and field, but volleyball remains her favorite sport. She hopes to continue playing at the college level and eventually become a volleyball coach.

At Shawnee, she appreciates the fun and supportive atmosphere surrounding the program.

“What I love most about my teammates and team at Shawnee is they really like to have fun in the game and are always willing to help me out!” Howle said.
