When an athlete makes the decision to compete in sports, they know that in order to be successful, they have to be willing to work hard and do more than their competition in order to get a leg up. Ethan Oller is a senior at Shawnee High School and a member of the swim team, and he knows what it takes to be the best.
“Success requires a strong work ethic to go above and beyond what my competition is doing, dedication to show up to every practice, and grit to push my hardest at every practice. You also need a strong team that holds each other accountable in the pool.”
Ethan is the team captain for the Wolves’ swim team. Individually, he swims the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. He is also a part of the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle relay. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and Senior Leadership Council at Shawnee High School, and he is the Gordon Cooper Technology Center chapter of Business Professionals of America President. Outside of school, he is a member of Boy Scouts, in which he has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. And he is a member of the Aquatic Club of Enid.
As a swimmer, Ethan says that some of his role models are other swimmers.
“My biggest influences are strong swimmers, whether it be Olympians or collegiate athletes,” Oller said. “Observing them gives me a strong model to follow in all aspects of swimming and even daily life, be it in or out of the pool, on and off the pool deck.”
Oller says that his teammates have also been a key to his success in the pool, but he says that there is one teammate he enjoys working with the most.
“The teammate that pushes me the most is Piper McNeil,” he said. “We both want to better ourselves at every practice, and we push each other to go faster, work harder, and do the best that we can.”
After he graduates high school, Ethan will be attending Lake Forest College in Illinois to swim and also further his education.
