Meeker’s Kara Casteel – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by FireLake Pizza

Kara Casteel

Meeker High School’s Kara Casteel plays guard for the varsity basketball team and is known for being the first one in the gym and the last one to leave.

“My strengths are free throws, rebounding, and being able to defend different positions. I am working on my shooting percentage. Most mornings I wake up at 5:00 AM and am at the YMCA getting shots up by 5:15 AM,” said Casteel. “When it comes to my team and teammates, I love the fact that there is always something happening. Going into practice every day I never know what to expect but I always leave laughing because of the girls. Another thing I love about my teammates is that we never hang our heads for too long when things get tough.”

Inspired by her parents, Casteel said they push her to reach her goals on and off the court.

“My biggest inspiration would probably be my parents. They always push themselves and each other to be the best that they can be. In result, they both push me to do my best in everything I do,” Casteel said.

At school, Casteel is involved in other activities and including serving as president of STUCO.

“At school I am involved in multiple clubs. I am the President of our Student Council and Vice President of our Indian Club. I am in National Honor Society and a member of the local Vision Bank Board.  I am a part of Yearbook and the Meeker Leadership Academy,” said Casteel. “My favorite subject in school is English. My favorite teacher has always been my freshman english teacher, Mrs. Brewster. Mrs. Brewster always put in effort when it came to having conversations with me and she still supports me through every basketball season.”

When she has some free time, you can usually find Casteel hanging out with friends and family, attending athletic events at the University of Oklahoma and going to concerts.

Casteel said her teammates are serious about the game but know when to have fun.

“Meadow Spencer always keeps everyone laughing with her jokes and dance moves. When it comes to being vocal, I would say Anna Standlee and Brynlee Gatz are our two talkers. Anna will always get the team in line and get everyone serious, but Brynlee is not afraid to chime in and speak her mind,” Casteel said.
