Q&A With North Rock Creek’s Sydney Balmes – Presented By BancFirst

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

Sydney: Volleyball has taught me to use my voice. My communication skills have improved and helped me in the real world.

VYPE: When and how did you first get into playing your sport?

Sydney: I first started playing when I was nine years old. My mom just signed me up for a camp here in Shawnee. After a couple of years, I continued playing for more competitive teams in the city.

VYPE: What is your favorite part about representing your high school as an athlete?

Sydney: Getting to hopefully be someone a younger athlete can look up to. Not only on the court but in the real world.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Sydney: A teammate that has left the biggest impression on me would be Chloe Carter. She graduated last year and I had the privilege of playing with her for two years. Chloe is a great leader that has led me not only to want to fill in her shoes but led me to Christ.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade?

Sydney: My favorite teacher is Mrs. Barnett. She is like a role model for me because she keeps me in check and loves each and every one of her students and truly wants the best for us.

VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

Sydney: The best advice anyone has given me is from Taryn Weber. As a 5’6 hitter, it’s hard to play like the 6’0 hitters. Taryn told me to play like I was big and it paid off.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation, where do you go and who do you take with you?

Sydney: If I could pick any place for a summer vacation, I would choose Reno, Nevada. I played in a tournament in Reno and visited Lake Tahoe and wish I would have gotten more time to spend there. I would take my former teammate Nicole because I always have a fun and amazing time with her.

VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.

Sydney: I would like to thank one of my coaches Charity Kilinc. She really is a true inspiration to look up to. Coach K is someone I have always and will always be able to talk to about anything and I am very grateful to have that relationship. She is our FCA sponsor and has driven so many of my peers to the Lord.

VYPE: Are you involved in any other activities?

Sydney: I am involved in a couple of the many clubs and organizations at NRC. I am a part of the student council as president of the senior class and leader in FCA and a member of NHS. Outside of school, I am a youth leader at my church, Faith Christian Outreach.
