The summer heat was relentless, but Alivia Grass stayed focused. It was a crucial moment during a tournament game, and the runner on third base was sprinting toward home. Despite playing with a broken finger, Grass crouched behind the plate, ready for the play. The ball came flying in from the outfield. Alivia caught it just in time, spun around, and tagged the runner out moments before they could slide into home plate. The crowd exploded with excitement, and in the bleachers, Alivia’s mom, Amelia Grass, was on her feet, cheering like she always does.
“That moment was so special,” Grass said. “She’s always there, watching and supporting me no matter what.” “My mom has always been there for me and seeing her so proud reminded me why I love this game so much.” Grass’s journey with softball started at just three years old. Growing up, she tried other sports like soccer and basketball, but it was the softball field that always felt like home. “Softball is my sport,” she said. “It’s taught me how to stay mentally strong and how to think through challenges—not just on the field but in life, too.”
Now a sophomore at Shawnee High School, Grass is a utility player, splitting time between shortstop and catcher. Her versatility and dedication have made her a key player on the team since her freshman year. “Softball feels like my second home,” she said. “It’s where I can truly be myself and do what I love.”
Over the years, Grass has created countless memories on the field, but one game that stands out to her was against Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School earlier this year. “Even though we didn’t win, the energy and intensity were unforgettable,” Grass said. “Games like that are why I love playing. It’s about having fun and giving it everything with your teammates.” Off the field, Grass keeps just as busy. She’s a dedicated student who balances academics with activities like Shawnee High School’s Native American Club, where she helps organize cultural events and community service projects.
“During Native American Heritage Month, we focus on giving back to the community,” she said. “It is a way to honor my roots and spend time with my family.” For Grass, her biggest inspiration has always been her mom. “She’s a strong, independent woman who always pushes me to do my best.” “She’s the reason I work so hard in school and on the field.” Looking ahead, Grass is focused on improving her offense and continuing to grow as a player. “Now I’m focusing on becoming a better hitter,” she said. With her determination and love for the game, Alivia Grass is ready for whatever comes next, both on and off the field.
