OFFENSE
This season has the potential to be one of the best under head coach Ty Bullock. With several key players returning and a good mix of young, exciting talent, the Savages are building what could be a team no one can sleep on this season. “We have a small senior class, but I love what they bring to the table on and off the field. Our young guys will be put into some key positions and will need to respond quickly. We have good team speed and some kids that can make some plays. We play a tough district-non district schedule so we need to control what we can control, play with tremendous effort, and stay healthy. If we can do those things, I truly believe we can make some noise in our district and be a week 11 football team,” said Bullock. Kaseon Pine (5-10, 175, Sr.) is back at wide receiver where he made 32 receptions with 413 yards and two TDs. With a high football IQ, Pine is an excellent route runner with great hands. Another player in the passing game to watch is Darrien Clark (6-2, 181, Sr.). Clark made 21 receptions for 374 yards last year. Quarterback Hollin Barnes (5-9, 188, Sr.) completed 74 of 147 passes for 1,023 yards and five TDs as a junior. Zant Shirey (5-5, 145, Sr.) had 30 rushing attempts for 257 yards on the ground, while Mason Wilson (5-7, 165, Jr) touched the ball 22 times for 167 yards. They make a solid one-two punch in the run game. Add Kadyn Prado (6-0, 227, Sr.) who is a move-in from Florida, has the athleticism and power to be an effective runner in the offense. Ryan Batterton (6-2, 247, Jr.) is a two-year starter up front and will start at tackle. Jax Johnson (6-1, 330, Jr.) and Ted Belshe (6-4, 228, Jr.) are battling for the other tackle spot. Carson Childers (5-10, 225, Jr.) will play one of the guard spots with Kade Donaghey (6-4, 256, So.) at the other guard position. Shane Blankenship (6-1, 247, Jr.) starts at center. Two tight ends will figure into the offense with Elijah King (6-0, 215, Sr.), and Marcus Judah (6-0, 205, Sr.). Both are physical players with high ceilings.
DEFENSE
Six starters are back in the 4-2-5 scheme the Savages will run this year. Clark holds the school record in career interceptions grabbing six INTs last year and scoring one pick six. If opposing teams are reading this, I encourage you to not throw his way. Test your luck against Cashawn Thompson (6-2), but don’t be surprised if it’s the same result. Jekhi Owens (5-11, 160, Jr.) is a playmaker at safety with Pine playing free safety. AJ Buttram (5-8, 145, Jr.) and Maddox Dickson (5-7, 135) are both pushing for playing time in the secondary. Braxton Meier (5-11, 208, Sr.) is a three-year starter at linebacker and is known for his toughness and physical play. Meier made 96 tackles last season and is an All-State type player. Wilson will se time at linebacker as well as Xavier Kommer (5-8, 155, Jr.). Both play with a reckless abandonment. Shirey, Wyatt McElfreshh (5-11, 160, Jr.), and Teddy Bryant (5-11, 175, So.) round out the linebacker corps with one of these guys moving to strong safety. Prado and King are the bookend defensive ends. King is a wrestler and loves the hand-to-hand combat. Judah will start at defensive tackle and is nasty on the interior of the line. Other players to watch include Dannie Shumny, Jayce Bullock (5-11, 170, So.) and Kruz Shirey (5-9, 170, So.).
