2024 Shawnee Wolves Football Preview – Presented by Amy Price – Shelter Insurance

SHAWNEE WOLVES

Coach: JASON MADONNA

3-7

OFFENSE

Shawnee looks to build on last season’s success in 2024, finally having their first off-season and spring ball under head coach Jason Madonna after missing out due to last year’s devastating tornado that left the team without facilities. “The offense looks to make strides under new starting QB Zyron Campbell and the return of RB Dace Shaw who missed last season with injury,” said Madonna. Zyron Campbell (6-3, 165, Jr.) saw limited action last season completing 21 passes for 325 yards and three TDs. Campbell will pilot the multi-set spread offense for the Wolves. Dace Shaw (6-1, 190, Sr.) is a dynamic player who will see time at running back and wide receiver. Shaw will make a splash this season in a big way. He also comes from NFL pedigree that includes Fred Shaw and Seymour Shaw. Another running back to watch is Deetrick Beavers (5-7, 160, Sr.) who accumulated 889 all-purpose yards and nine TDs last season. Beavers has a huge personality and brings a positive attitude to the locker room. The offensive line continues to improve thanks to guys like Ja’Qwon Evans (6-6, 290, Jr.) and Chuffee Waldon (6-2, 265, So.) at guard. Evans will start at tackle where he recorded 34 pancakes last season while Waldon has 12 pancakes as a freshman. With his play, Evans is forcing college recruiters to take notice. He has all of the tools on and off the field to be great at the next level. Josh Brown (6-3, 175, Sr.) is a big target in the passing game at WR and a matchup problem for smaller defensive backs.

DEFENSE

Look for the Wolves to play an aggressive style of defense with blitz packages that confuse opposing offensive lines. VYPE Top 100 nominee John Ryan High (6-1, 182, Sr.) notched 136 tackles, two sacks, and forced two fumbles with one INT and one defensive score. High will start at middle linebacker with Jayden Smith (6-1, 205, Jr.) playing outside linebacker. Smith accounted for 44 tackles, two sacks, and an INT. Jamir Owens (5-10, 170, Sr.) is a hybrid defender who can play linebacker or strong safety. His willingness to hit makes Smith a crucial piece of the puzzle. Shaw will play free safety and is cut from the same mold. Shaw does not mind sticking running backs and receivers who want to test his willingness to make a tackle. Lance Williams (6-1, 190, Sr.) will play corner giving the Wolves a player on the edge who matches up with anyone WR in the class. Williams had 82 tackles last season with two sacks and two fumble recoveries. He is the Swiss Army knife for the Wolves and comes from a football family. DeMario Joyner (6-3, 230, Sr.) gets the nod at defensive end where he made 59 tackles and three sacks as a junior. Logan Skelton became the first freshman to start at Shawnee in several years. Look for Skelton to play guard on offense and tackle on defense. Also pay attention to ILB Dawson McDaniel (5-10, 195). McDaniel put in tremendous work in the offseason and transformed his body giving him the size he needs to play inside.
