Seminole Chieftains 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Natalie Arnett – State Farm Insurance

SEMINOLE CHIEFTAINS

Coach: MIKE SNYDER

3-7

OFFENSE

Oklahoma’s all-time winningest football coach is back for his 44th season as the head man at Seminole. The Chieftains are bolstered by a strong sophomore class that cut their teeth against a very difficult schedule in 2022. The offensive line will be a strength heading into the fall. Jayden Stewart (6-0, 220, Sr.) and David Hernandez (6-2, 250, Sr.) are both three-year starters. There is a nice mix of youth and experience behind them with Maverick Northrup (6-1, 240, So.) and Sam Self (6-2, 235, So.) coming back after earning starting positions as freshmen. Dontrae Garfield (6-0, 185, Jr.) is a returning starter at quarterback but will miss the early portion of the season after suffering a torn ACL in basketball. His younger brother Donovan Garfield (6-1, 195, So.) will step in to man the offense. The younger Garfield will throw to a pair of big targets at wide receiver in Mason Bennett (6-3, 180, So.) and Jay Ladd (6-2, 180, So.). Bennett finished second in the Class 3A state high jump as a freshman. They are both big play threats on offense. The Chieftains will look to fill a void at running back with several candidates in the mix.

DEFENSE

The defense is led by an experienced core of linebackers. Reed Bowers (5-9, 180, So.) was the second leading tackler for the Chieftains in 2022. Bowers, Isaac Bighead (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Jordan Lowe (5-9, 175, Sr.) operate around an interior with several players alternating headlined by Jayden Stewart (6-0, 220, Sr.). Both Mason Bennett (6-3, 180, So.) and Jay Ladd (6-2, 180, So.) bring athletic ability to the safety position. Bennett has all the tools to play at the next level. Seminole will never back down from a challenge. The non-district schedule features Texas powerhouse Canadian along with Class 5A Shawnee and Class 4A neighbors Harrah and Tecumseh. While Lincoln Christian is the clear district favorite, this young group of Chieftains will fight with all they have to return to the postseason.
