SHAWNEE WOLVES
Coach: JASON MADONNA
0-10
OFFENSE
First-year Shawnee head coach Jason Madonna hopes to re-establish Shawnee as a power in 5A football. The junior-led team will look to “revive the program.” Five offensive starters return. Zyron Campbell (6-2, 170, So.), a promising two-way player, returns as the Wolves quarterback after he got his feet wet in varsity action as a freshman. The athletic gunslinger makes plays with his feet and impressed with his improvised, sometimes off-balance, but on-target throws last year. In Shawnee’s spread offense, Campbell have big target sin receiver Ejion Thomas (5-10, 165, Jr.) and tight end Larron Thomas (6-3, 190, Sr.), who can lend his strength and athleticism in some personnel packages. Dace Shaw (6-1, 175, Jr.), the team’s returning feature back, will add his great feel for running lanes and open field acceleration. On both sides, Campbell will have reliable protection from tackles JaQwon Evans (6-6, 285, So.) and Warrior Squire (6-2, 215, Jr.).
DEFENSE
The Wolves will mix things up with a multi-front defensive alignment this year with focuses on pressure and aggression with five returning starters. Thomas, one of the team’s premier defensive players, is an impressive pass rusher and “is going to cause offenses problems,” if you ask Madonna. Shawnee has an impressive linebacking corps returning behind Thomas. John Ryan High (6-1, 185, Jr.) had over 100 tackles and 16 tackles for loss as only a sophomore with a pair of fumble recoveries and a touchdown. The intuitive defender displayed a knack for sniffing out screens and flattening ball-carriers. Toby Grey (6-1, 190, Jr.) and Shaw, who has a great nose for the ball, bring back their talents to the lineup. Xavier Scott (6-0, 160, Jr.) is the team’s top returning defensive back and primary pass-defender.
