Meeker will be very experienced on both sides of the ball in 2023 under head coach Maverick Lang. The Bulldogs return eight starters on offense, which will feature a no-huddle attack with multiple formations. “We will utilize different motions and shifts to allow for our guys to get the ball in space. We are pretty evenly split throughout the season on run/pass. We have athletic offensive lineman that we use to pull and get down field on linebackers and secondary players,” Lang said. Leading the way will be running back and VYPE Top 100 selection Ajay Lynch (5-10, 190, Sr.). Lynch rushed for 1,124 yards and 16 TDs in 2022 and also added 589 receiving yards and eight scores. “Ajay is a standout player for us that brings a huge skill set to the RB position,” Lang said. “He is an elusive runner that can also bring power with him. He is great out of the backfield running routes.” Also returning are quarterback Trayvon Compton (5-10, 175, Jr.), receiver Manny Saavedra (5-11, 185, Jr.), offensive lineman Bobby Brooks (6-6, 295, Sr.) and Houston Williams (6-3, 265, Jr.). Compton completed percent of his passes last year with 1,552 yards and 20 TDs, and Saavedra had 26 catches for 386 yards and five TDs. Senior Kayde Massey (6-3, 220) will be Meeker’s H-back. He had 41 receptions for 369 yards and three TDs in 2022.
DEFENSE
The Bulldogs welcome back seven starters on defense, which will base out of the 4-2-5. “We will use a couple different fronts and blitz packages to try and put pressure on the offense. We believe in getting athletic guys on the field that can fly to the ball and make plays,” Lang said. Back on the defensive line are Kayde Massey, Houston Williams, Andrew Gonzalez (6-2, 260, Sr.) and Jacob Campbell (6-0, 220, Sr.). Ajay Lynch will lead the secondary, and Brayden Dowdle (5-11, 225, Sr.) brings back experience at linebacker. “We will have good size up front with pretty good speed behind them with the linebackers and defensive backs,” Lang said. Keegan Edmonds will also factor in on the backend of the defense as a strong safety. “We have a group of kids that have been starting since they were freshman and sophomores and now, they are juniors and seniors with a ton of Friday night experience under their belts that we believe will be beneficial for them this coming season,” Lang said. “We have a lot of returners, but we are most excited about bringing back our whole offensive and defensive line.”
