High school athletes do more than just compete in their sport. They are also a representative of their school and community. Brook Rutland is a senior at Dale High School and a member of the school’s basketball team. She knows that representing her school is important and says that she does not take it lightly whenever she wears her school colors. “Being able to wear Dale across my chest every day means I am able to represent and show pride in my small hometown school and community,” she said. “Playing on the court gives me the opportunity to perform and give back to all the people who have poured into
me, and got me where I am today.” As an athlete, Brook has a number of people that she looks up to as role models for her life, both on and off the court. “I would say my biggest influence is definitely my sister,” she said. “She has taught me how to overcome so many different challenges and at the end of
the day, she is my biggest motivator and one of the only few people who can bring back my confidence when lost. Also, my middle school teacher, Mrs. Payne has always been there for me. Still to this day she remains to be my favorite teacher because of how positive and funny she is.” Brook has put in a lot of hard work and time in order to become a successful athlete. She says that the work is important, but your mindset is just as important. “I think the will to never give up is what ultimately makes any team successful, especially mine. When the odds aren’t in your favor it’s important to never give up and keep on pushing. Along with basketball, Rutland is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes,
the student council, and the National Honor Society. Whenever she has downtime, she enjoys looking through her social media and has one person that she really enjoys following. “Sadie Robertson is one of the few people on social media I actually look up to,” she stated. “Her heart and compassion for people are something I find amazing. She makes podcasts and YouTube videos devoting it all to Christ and spreading his love around the world.”
